The Online Merriam-Webster Dictionary

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary’s website is a handy resource for anyone that wants a quick and easy way to check on the definition of a word, and a lot more. I have regularly and actively used this site when I have written some of my undergraduate and graduate academic papers. This website has five basic sections to it:

  • Dictionary – Complete definitions of words and their origins, known synonyms and antonyms, and examples of the word used in a sentence.
  • Thesaurus – Complete definitions of words, and the available synonyms, related words, near antonyms, and antonyms for each definition of the word.
  • Medical – Complete medical definitions of words.
  • Scrabble – Complete definitions of words, and playable words that you can use to play the game “Scrabble.”
  • Spanish Central – Provides the Spanish translation of  words.

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary’s website also offers word games that you can play, where you can check on the quality and strength of your own vocabulary, learn about commonly misspelled words, and more.

There is a newsletter available that allows Merriam-Webster to send you their “Word of the Day.” You can subscribe to the English and/or Spanish “Word of the Day.” All you have to do is provide the Merriam-Webster Dictionary website with your email address, and follow their instructions.
